Engaging Communities Through Dynamic Design and Illustration

Background

HKUSTours is an initiative by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) aimed at enhancing community engagement and promoting awareness of the university's rich natural and cultural environment. The tours, which take place every October, invite participants to explore not only the stunning Clear Water Bay campus but also the surrounding Hang Hau community. This initiative is designed to provide a unique experience that combines education, cultural immersion, and appreciation of the local flora and fauna.​

In previous iterations, HKUSTours has successfully attracted diverse participants, including students, faculty, alumni, and the general public. The tours typically feature visits to local landmarks such as the Hang Hau Tin Hau Temple, where participants can learn about the local history and culture, showcases HKUST's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Design Solution

The design solution for HKUSTours features a vibrant and dynamic illustration style, characterised by geometric shapes and a natural colour palette of greens and blues. This choice of colours reflects the lush environment around the HKUST campus and creates a harmonious connection with nature.

 

Dynamic Illustrations

The illustrations are crafted in a geometric style, ensuring that they are visually striking while also being easy to interpret. These illustrations divide the various components of the tour, including specific areas of the campus, the Ocean Research Facility, and notable local flora and fauna. Each illustration part focuses on specific themes, such as:

School Campus

Showcasing iconic university buildings and spaces that define the HKUST experience.

Ocean Research Facility

Highlighting the university's commitment to marine research and environmental sustainability.


Signature Plants and Animals:

Featuring local wildlife and plant species that participants may encounter during the tours, enhancing the educational aspect of the experience. For example: Rubber Fig, Hong Kong Orchid Tree, Chinese Banyan, Horseshoe Crab and Starfish.
